Horace Roman is surgeon of endometriosis at Institut Franco-Européen Muntidisciplinaire d’Endométriose (IFEMEndo, Franco-European Multidisciplinary Institute for Endometriosis) in Bordeaux, France and Honorary Professor at Aarhus University Hospital, Denmark. He is a former Professor in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Rouen Medical University in France. He is one of the rare surgeons worldwide whose surgical activity has been exclusively reserved for endometriosis for more than ten years. His practice and clinical research focus on the surgical management of patients with deep endometriosis. He has published more than 190 scientific articles related to various surgical approaches and the probability of postoperative natural conception following surgery for deep and ovarian endometriosis. Since 2005, he has managed more than 1,400 patients with deep endometriosis infiltrating the digestive tract, more than 250 with endometriosis of the urinary tract, more than 120 with involvement of sacral plexus or sciatic nerves, and 70 with endometriosis of the diaphragm. He privileges conservative procedures in deep endometriosis of the rectum and performed more than 450 rectal disc excisions. His approach to ovarian endometriomas is based on the ablation of the cyst’s inner surface using plasma energy to preserve ovarian parenchyma and ovarian reserve. He performed the ENDORE, the unique randomized trial comparing radical and conservative surgery for colorectal endometriosis. He was conducting the MESURE randomized trial comparing medical and surgical management for rectal endometriosis. He edited the EFFORT randomized trial protocol comparing first-line surgery to first-line IVF in women with colorectal endometriosis and pregnancy intention. He is a member of the boards of the European Endometriosis League, the World Endometriosis Society, and the French Society of Gynecologic and Pelvic Surgery. He is responsible for the Surgical Task Force of the Society of Endometriosis and Uterine Diseases. He founded with Dr. Benjamin Merlot and Dr. Isabella Chanavaz-Lacheray the IFEMEndo in Bordeaux, among the 2 European centers with the highest surgical volume for complex endometriosis. He recently founded with Dr. Monica Chauhan, Dr. Sandesh Kade, and Dr. Benjamin Merlot the IFEMEndo-Middle East Clinic, a Burjeel Holdings Company, in Abu Dhabi, a department exclusively dedicated to the management of severe endometriosis. He is certified Master Surgeon in Multidisciplinary Endometriosis Care, and IFEMEndo was certified Center of Excellence in Multidisciplinary Endometriosis Care (COEMEC, 2019-2026). He exclusively performs minimally invasive surgery by laparoscopy with or without robotic assistance (One open surgery from 2018 to 2023).
